LEARNING AND CARING FOR LANZAROTE

Lanzarote boasts a series of unique characteristics that set it apart from other tourist destinations. When visiting the island, a listed Biosphere Reserve, you must remember that factors such as its volcanic origins, its desert climate and wealth of natural resources make it extremely fragile.

We all have a part to play in guaranteeing its conservation, so keep these important tips in mind throughout your stay:

CONSUME FOOD PRODUCED ON LANZAROTE:

When it comes to eating, opt for local produce such as our Designation of Origin wines. Agriculture played a vital role in the island’s economy in the past and today shapes the island’s landscape. Do your bit to preserve the beauty of the agricultural landscapes.

STAY ON THE ROAD.

The tracks left by vehicles on volcanic materials take years to disappear. Avoid using aggressive means of transport when travelling inland on the island. Hiking or cycling routes are more environmentally friendly. The use of more aggressive means of transport such as motocross bikes, fourtrax bikes erode the land, produce contamination, noise and endanger our wildlife.

DO NOT THROW LITTER, CIGARETTE ENDS OR OTHER WASTE PRODUCTS.

The island’s residents have always been aware of the need to conserve and keep their environment clean. Contribute by adopting our cultural values.

KEEP TO THE FOOTPATHS.

A simple footprint on recently formed materials takes months to disappear.

DO NOT TAKE VOLCANIC MATERIALS AWAY WITH YOU.

Geology is the principle feature of the island’s scenery.

DO NOT PICK PLANTS AND FLOWERS.

Lanzarote boasts a flora unlike any other in the world, but it is scarce and very precious.

USE THE LITTER BINS ON THE BEACH, OR IF THERE ARE NONE, TAKE YOUR RUBBISH HOME WITH YOU.

The beaches are one of the island’s many attractions. Do not allow rubbish to gather on them.

RESPECT THE SEA.

Do not throw waste products into the sea. When scuba diving, take care not to damage the algae or capture living animals from the seabed. The sea is one of our most important assets.

WHEN SHOPPING, CHOOSE LOCAL ARTS AND CRAFTS.

Ask at the tourist information offices for details of shops specialising in local arts and crafts.

VISIT THE ART, CULTURAL AND TOURISM CENTRES.

The network of tourist centres is the finest hallmark of Lanzarote’s built and environmental heritage and its cultural identity. Discover Lanzarote’s art and culture.
